J-1 Intern Program

This program is designed for students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program outside of the U.S. and have an academic requirement for practical field experience. Additional information can also be found on the website of the U.S. Department of State.

Internship programs provide unique opportunities for interns to gain practical experience in the process of conducting research in their chosen academic field. The internship must fulfill educational objectives for the intern’s degree program at his or her home institution.

SEAS faculty members who are interested in sponsoring a J-1 Intern for a period of time at GW should contact [email protected].

Process Overview

There is no formal application process for the J-1 intern program. The process for a student coming to GW on a J-1 intern visa must be initiated by a SEAS faculty member. Prospective interns interested in pursuing this program should contact a SEAS faculty member to indicate their interest and seek sponsorship.

If a SEAS faculty member decides to host an intern, he or she must contact the SEAS Office of Graduate Admissions and Student Services by email ([email protected]) and provide the prospective intern's contact information. The office will then work directly with the prospective intern and host faculty member to prepare the necessary paperwork.

Once the prospective intern and host faculty member have submitted the appropriate documentation, an official invitation letter and the DS-2019 Form (immigration document) will be created and sent to the intern. The prospective intern will then apply for the J-1 visa at their local U.S. embassy or consulate.
