SEAS On-Campus Graduate Student Academic Grievance Process
Please review the SEAS On-Campus Graduate Program Regulations for the complete policies governing SEAS graduate students. The processes below outline procedures for students who do not meet academic performance standards. Initial decisions are usually made at the department level. If the student wishes to appeal the decision, they may do so with the associate dean for academic affairs, in the dean’s office. The decision from the Dean’s office is final.
Student Grade Grievance Process
The purpose of this process is to resolve student assertions of “cases of Alleged Arbitrary or Capricious Academic Evaluation” in the form of a course grade in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) and in accordance with the GW Code of Student Conduct. For questions regarding grade grievances, please consult the GW Engineering Grade Grievance Process Guide.
Termination from Degree Program
SEAS On-campus graduate students may risk being terminated from their degree programs for the following reasons:
- Students who have received three grades below a B- or two F grades as outlined in the Graduation and Scholarship Requirements policy.
- Students who failed to meet their admissions conditions, as outlined in their official admissions letter.
Process:
Students who meet the termination criteria will receive an email notifying them of the termination. They are required to meet with the Director of Graduate Enrollment and Student Services to discuss their situation and the possibility of petitioning to stay in their graduate program. During the meeting, students will be informed of the petition process and receive the Petition for Exception to Stated Academic Policies Form. Failure to schedule the meeting within the timeline outlined in the email, or failure to submit the petition, will result in academic termination from the program.
Timeline:
After meeting with the Director of Graduate Enrollment & Student Services, students have one week to submit a completed and signed petition along with necessary documentation, by emailing the completed petition to seasgrad
gwu [dot] edu (seasgrad[at]gwu[dot]edu). Students can expect to receive a response within two to three weeks upon the submission of the completed petition. If more time is necessary to finalize a decision, the student will be notified accordingly of the timeline for a decision.
Please note: All petition requests that have a decision from the Dean’s office are final and cannot be appealed.
