Funding Your Graduate Education
GW Engineering offers funding opportunities for both MS and PhD programs. PhD students are often offered full funding packages. MS students are considered for a range of merit-based partial tuition awards. Students are typically notified in their admission letter of any funding offers.
Funding for New MS Students
- Merit-Based Scholarships
SEAS offers a variety of merit-based scholarship awards for on-campus master's degree program students. These awards are tuition discounts that currently range from 25-75%. The awards are valid for the entire duration of the master's degree program as long as the award recipient is in good academic standing. These awards are only allocated to incoming master's degree program students during the admissions process. Continuing students who have already started their studies are not eligible to apply for these awards.
- Grad2Grad
Are you a current GW undergraduate student considering graduate school? You could receive a tuition reduction through Grad2Grad.
- Minority Serving Institutions
GW Engineering strives to create a scholarly community of inclusive excellence that values the contributions from students who bring diverse perspectives to our campus. Students who hold bachelor’s degrees from a recognized Minority Serving Institution (MSI) will be considered for an MSI tuition discount award. These awards will be awarded on a competitive basis to qualifying applicants. The awards are valid for the entire duration of the master's degree program as long as the award recipient is in good academic standing and will apply to tuition only. These awards are only allocated to incoming master's degree program students during the admissions process. Continuing students who have already started their studies are not eligible to apply for these awards.
- Loan Assistance
The GW Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) oversees the processing of all loans for students who have been admitted to a GW graduate degree or certificate program. Federal loan programs require U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status and at least half-time attendance. Credit-based consumer loans are available to supplement other sources of aid, and OSFA can provide school certification for any alternative program you choose. Instructions for applying for these different types of loans are provided online.
- Military Education Benefits
If you are a veteran, active duty service member or dependent of either, you may be eligible for financial aid through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. The Office of Military and Veteran Student Services can help you navigate programs like the Montgomery GI Bill and the Post-9/11 GI Bill to obtain support for your graduate program.
- Tuition Assistance for GW Employees
Through the tuition remission benefit, GW extends its educational resources to our employees and their dependents. The benefit provides competitive, accessible and valuable tuition benefits to those who seek to further develop themselves, both personally and professionally. Employees may not combine tuition benefits with any graduate award.
- The Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships
The Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships (OGSAF) educates prospective and current graduate students at the George Washington University about funding opportunities at the Master's and PhD levels. Funding for New PhD Students
- Graduate Research and Teaching Assistantships
Funding for doctoral students at the School of Engineering & Applied Science generally comes in one of two forms: graduate research assistantships (GRAs) or graduate teaching assistantships (GTAs). Funding amounts vary by department, faculty member and research topic. There is no separate application process to qualify for doctoral funding. All applicants who submit an application for a doctoral program are generally considered for funding during the application review process and selected directly by a faculty member. If you are awarded funding, you will be notified in your admissions letter.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How much does it cost to attend GW Engineering?
Please see the Tuition and Financial Aid page for the latest tuition rates and fees.
- How do I apply for funding?
We will automatically consider all MS applicants for the funding offered through the Office of Graduate Admissions and Student Services. For PhD applicants, your academic department will automatically consider you for available funding opportunities during their admission review.
- What are the chances of receiving funding?
We are not able to assess your chances of receiving funding prior to the full review of your completed application package. Funding is limited and typically awarded to candidates with a strong prior academic performance and otherwise notable achievements or experiences. For PhD applicants, funding decisions are made at the department level by a faculty review committee.
- As a PhD applicant, do I need to connect with a faculty member before applying?
While it can certainly increase the likelihood of being admitted, it is not required to connect with a faculty member in advance. All completed applications are sent to the department’s admission committee for full consideration.
